Ajoite Crystals
Ajoite Crystals are an inclusion of quartz, therefore is also called, Ajoite quartz. It is white in color with a bluish green finish caused by a complex mineral of hydrated potassium sodium copper aluminum silicate hydroxide. It's hardness is 3.5 and has a specific gravity of 2.9-3.1.
Ajoite was first discovered by the Papago Indians in Ajo, Pomona County, Arizona. The place where it's name was derived. Yet, the most sought after specimen can be found in the copper mines of Messina, Northern Transvaal, South Africa.
Since the year 1960, only 9 pockets were found at the Messina fault. In 1991, the 2 remaining pockets were found by the chief tunnel blaster, Harry Smith at the 14th level - 5th shaft, over 4000 foot deep below the surface of the mine. In 1992, the mine closed due to its now-dangerous tunnels making the crystal rarer and more valuable.
